About Us

Existing in a fairly large range of communities, substance abuse is an unrecognized and lingering issue, explicitly dangerous to the youth and adolescent community. The misuse of drugs and substances often serve as an unhealthy, addictive, and permanent solution to temporary issues that could be handled in safe and healthy ways. Research has been done, revealing that 48.5 million (16.7%) Americans over the age of 12 have dealt with substance abuse in the past year. While I would like to focus on the community of my state, I believe this fact uncovers the true depth of this problem. To battle this issue, I would like to create a group that would collectively make PSA visuals which would promote the journey of recovery. I believe this would help to spread awareness on the topic, but also build a community. I would also like to create a website to act as an exhibit for the PSAs. I would like to contact recovery centers to suggest displaying the PSAs in the centers, or even to get perspectives from people who are in the process of recovery. I like this project idea, as it symbolizes a collaboration between the peace of art, and intensity of recovery. As someone who has seen the causes and effects of substance abuse in my own friendships, I understand the gravity of this issue, and the action required to battle it. In terms of outcomes, I would be satisfied with getting the created PSAs into recovery centers, and building a community of people willing to contribute to this cause. I think that this can also serve as a method of measuring the progress of this project. The genuine problem in substance abuse not only lies in the misuse of drugs, but the lack of recognition given to the problem. Awareness must be raised as we gradually address this issue which has been impacting our community for far too long.
